This May wedding weekend was a busy one for us, with five different events over just 2 days. But then again, when you’re scheduled to photograph a beautiful, elegant, black tie wedding at the Tuxedo Club in New York, the busy schedule is so worth it. This rainy day Tuxedo Club wedding came just after a welcome dinner and drinks the previous night, and excitement for the big day was super high.
The grounds of this venue are absolutely stunning. The Tuxedo Club is a distinctive social institution that, since 1886, has provided its members and their families and guests with recreation and refuge with close proximity to Metropolitan New York City. The Club’s vast grounds, varied sporting venues and multiple clubhouse facilities make it one of the most special private clubs in the world, and it’s easy to understand why.
Facilities include golf, five racquet sport venues, a boathouse, fitness facility, swimming complex and two architecturally renowned clubhouses, all of which provide the diverse membership with opportunities for social interaction.
Nonstop rain couldn’t put a damper on this Tuxedo Club wedding day. Fortunately the venue is so spacious, so the options for portraits were plentiful. The first look, formal photos, and ceremony took place inside, and the sun greeted us temporarily for cocktail hour.
Shortly before Claire and Yanni’s big day, I began experimenting with my medium format film camera. I brought it along with my digital and 35mm film camera and ended up using tons of film. At one point, a bridesmaid shot some rolls on my point and shoot film camera. She did a great job!
The ceremony is done, the marriage license is signed, and the toasts have been…toasted(?). What comes next? Nonstop dancing. This couldn’t be done without the aid of the amazing wedding band New York Edge. After some passed desserts, Claire and Yanni took the mic to announce a special reception surprise — Claire’s dad on the drums. It honestly felt like a concert.
Claire and Yanni are two of the most beautiful and genuine people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. By the end of the day, I felt like a part of the gang.
The Tuxedo Club is one of those places with so much thought put into every detail in each room; seeing it transform for Claire and Yanni was truly magical.
I think the most important thing when photographing your wedding is getting to know you as individuals, and as a couple. Too often, photographers will apply a "one size fits all" approach; but photos and poses that worked for someone else may not work for you. It's my job to adapt to you, not the other way around.
